Sneaking Up!

This year my family decided to go on vacation right after Christmas instead of buying a ton of presents. We still sponsored the little boy and buy him gifts. This year he wanted a bike and basketball. I remember the days when my guys only wanted a bike or a basketball. As they got older, gifts got more expensive and they have gotten harder to buy for. They have everything they possibly need. Of course they get new clothes because all three of them have grown over an inch or two since September!

HOW DID THAT HAPPEN?? It seems like a year ago they were size 8 in little boys. Now I can't even buy their pants in store! I have to shop on line for all of my guys which does make clothes shopping much easier....

Inquiring reader minds want to know!

Romancing the Holidays

There is NOTHING more fun as a writer than meeting up with awesome readers! Especially during the holidays when everyone has a took of the spirit and feeling great!

I'm fortunate enough to have had an AWESOME book signing at our local Barnes and Noble store. LET ME TELL YOU~ I loved loved loved seeing June Heal and Mr. Prince Charming on the bookshelf along side a bunch of my other author friends!

There was so much holiday cheers with the music, cookies, and giveaways. A few my street team members came to give me a grand hello! It was great to see them!

I was so shocked to see they had bought ME gifts!! I couldn't believe it.

Totally digging this glass! Of course I had to make a cocktail and post a pic!
AND...my readers know me sooooo well. They all know I'm always cold and she MADE these for me! Can you believe it?
OH....I also got some goodie treats but they didn't make it long enough to get a picture. They were YUMMY!!!

Spread The Holiday Love

There is nothing I love more than to give, give, and give. Each year my family and I sponsor a family for Christmas. My guys love it and I hope I am teaching them some great morals not to mention the lesson of giving without expecting anything in return.

When I came across this video of WestJet Airlines and how they spread the holiday cheer~it warmed my heart to know that a major company is still in the spirit of giving.

Yes! I cried when I watched it. So go on....give!
It doesn't have to be a family or a big gift. Sometimes folks just need a smile, cup of coffee, or a hug.
Cheers!

Early Christmas Present

Life has been really good lately! First off. . .a year ago you know I went through a total kitchen remodel and it was BEAUTIFUL!
(This is me and oldest twin in our old kitchen)
THEN...
I was driving in one of my FIVE carpools to school and there was a house for sale. Yep, we bought it, moved, and a year later....another kitchen remodel!

(Hubby and son's friend in photo)
As you can see, I went with a much lighter kitchen with stainless steel, butcher block and bamboo elements. It's totally gorg! I will show you a pic when it's all said and done....
BUT THAT IS NOW MY EARLY CHRISTMAS GIFT!
After three years of learning the in's and out's of self publishing, I decided it was time to do the HYBRID thing. What is that? Most of you readers don't know the term and probably don't care.
Here is the deal.
A hybrid author is someone who self publishes and traditionally publishes with a publisher. Yes. I am in Barnes and Noble because I made my own deal as a self published author, which is pretty much unheard of. Remember I DON'T TAKE NO FOR AN ANSWER!
But what about film rights and foreign rights? Yes. I have been approached by several foreign rights publishers but I don't have time to focus on understanding all of that or I would never get all those books out to you *wink*.
So....I signed with an agent to help broker those deals and I couldn't be more happy. And yes, I will write some novels to be published traditionally.

What does this mean to you, my readers?
Really not a big change in how much books I put out a year because I will still be self publishing my series and traditionally publishing some new series. I'm still traveling all over, just like I always have, hosting my street team parties and hanging with y'all! Which reminds me...have you checked out my website for all of my 2014 events yet?? I'm traveling, traveling, traveling and hoping to meet you soon!!

Wendy Darlin' Tomb Raider Box Set ~ Purchase NOW: Amazon

Contains the Three full-length novels:
WENDY AND THE LOST BOYS ~ Book One See the trailer on YouTube Real estate agent for Miami Beach millionaires, Wendy Darlin, clashes with “SEC Investigator” and world famous archaeologist, Roger Jolley. He follows her out to sea on a mega-yacht owned by Charlie Hook, a Ponzi swindler on the run from federal agents and angry investors. Despite her fear of water, she finds herself a tomb raider on the Caribbean one step ahead of modern day pirates. Will she find the Lost Boys? Will she escape Hook’s clutches? And whom will she find on Nevis Island? Oh… and is Roger a good kisser?

Sometimes the journey you set out on is not the one you return from.I lay on my stomach on Belgian cream-colored sheets in my suite on the 370-foot yacht rocking in the waters somewhere in the Bermuda Triangle. I had finished a pitcher of screwdrivers before the sun came up and was feeling woozy. As I dozed in my bikini, something jumped on my back. I tried to fight it off, rolled over, and found myself looking at a giant tongue and two beady eyes. It was like being married again. All six feet of Hook’s bony body retreated when I brought my knee up catching him in his man-berries. He turned, rolling off the bed and abruptly slamming his johnson into the teak nightstand. His penis was huge, dark, and engorged. I was right about the blue pills in his master suite. They were erectile dysfunction drugs. Of course, with the name UpUGo, it didn’t take Sherlock Holmes to figure it out. “I knew you were taking that junk. Don’t waste your time,” I said to the naked old man with the flabby butt as he held himself with a panicked look on his face. “And get out of my suite. The door was locked for a reason! How’d you get in here?” “It’s been more than four hours, Wendy,” he whimpered. “I’m still hard and it hurts like hell. Help me!” His once chiseled features hung like melted wax from his cheekbones. “My promise to Marni to care for you did not include sex… no way… under no circumstances. That’s what you get for messing with that stuff. Just get out of my way!” I snatched the ten-pound white hairball called Tinkerbelle from the foot of the bed and made my way to the sun deck. Hook’s Predator was a yacht on steroids. It took ten minutes to get from my suite to the upper floor. Hook had spent over $200 million of Ponzied money on this floating erection. He recited the Predator’s talents daily, like a mantra he hoped would keep away the feds, investors, and victims who wanted nothing more than to see him keelhauled. Once on the sun deck, I reclined on a cushioned lounge chair. Tink licked my face, her Maltese dog fur tickling my nose. I wrapped her leash around my left hand and whispered into her ear, “You poor little puppy. You don’t understand we buried your mama yesterday.” The tears came. There was no holding them back. How did I let myself get into this situation? I regretted the day I first heard Hook’s name and regretted even more the day I introduced him to Marni.
LONDON BROIL ~ Book Two See the trailer on YouTube When we last saw Wendy Darling and Roger Jolley in WENDY AND THE LOST BOYS, they were hot on the trail of Egyptian icons stolen from the British Museum. Wendy is now in a frantic race against time and a murderer as she searches for the last Lost Boy hidden somewhere in London while a killer heat wave invades the city. Wendy is held captive over a fish ‘n’ chips shop while Roger’s life is threatened. Can Wendy escape her captors, rescue Roger, and find the missing Lost Boy before the murderer strikes again?

I woke the next morning to the overpowering smell of curry and lamb. Yuck. I buried my face in the pillow. Whatever happened to a good old English breakfast of bangers, rubber eggs, and fried bread? My nerves were rubbing on imaginary broken glass as I sidled to the kitchen. The curry pot bubbled away unattended. A blob of red sauce had spilled on the floor, and a kitchen knife lay next to it. I shut off the pot, bent down and picked up the knife. Then I realized it wasn’t red curry on the floor. The spot was a bloody footprint. I dropped the knife. It bounced on the floor. Adrenalin rocketing through my body, the brassy taste of fear filled my mouth. Whoever left the footprint had to be nearby… perhaps in the pantry. The back door was slightly open. I could see Holly and Hildy standing with their heads near the door, waiting for their breakfast. Some watch-geese. Should I call the police? What would I report? Unattended curry, a bloody footprint, and a kitchen knife with my fingerprints on it? I should have known better than to touch lonely hot pots and sticky red knives. But they don’t teach you that in real estate school, and I was learning tomb raiding on the job. Thud! And again another thud! The noise sounded as if it came from the wine cellar. I thought to call out to Samuel, but reconsidered. I remained unsure about the virtues of the houseman, and the bloody knife on the floor made me even less confident. I snuck up the six flights to Benny’s room and knocked on his door, once, then twice. No answer. Ever so slowly I opened it. Benny’s bed was made. Had he gotten up early or hadn’t it been slept in? I checked his bathroom and closet. Roger’s client had vanished. I’d screwed up my first archaeological assignment. Stepping as lightly as I could, I made my way down two flights to my room. I slipped inside and turned the lock, then made a mad dash to the closet to pack my suitcase. Pausing, I realized my luggage would make too much noise and slow me down. I’d seen too many horror movies. I knew the bad guy – if there was a bad guy – was lurking under the stairs or in the foyer. They always are. Screw my suitcase. I found a black plastic trash bag on the closet shelf. Perfect. I threw three designer outfits in it, tossed in some sandals, my toiletries, and knotted the end. I gently pitched the bag out the window onto the shrubs directly below in the garden. I had no intention of leaving without a few of my St. John dresses. I’d worked too hard to pay for them. I eased my way down two flights of stairs, quietly entered the bedroom over the shrubs, and closed the door behind me. I tried to raise the window. It was painted shut but gave way with a screech to my lifting. The trellis came up to the bottom of the windowsill. It might not hold my weight, but those prickly dry shrubs just below should cushion my fall. Carrying my purse, I grabbed the frail woodwork like a demented musketeer. Unfortunately, the ground came up rather quickly. “Ouch!” said a strange voice as I landed on something round and boney. Benny had called this place a garden of constant surprise. I had just encountered one.
CAIRO CAPER ~ Book Three See the trailer on YouTube Part-time tomb raider and full-time real estate broker, Wendy Darlin joins her lover, archaeologist Roger Jolley, in a quest for Cleopatra’s tomb. All they have to do is get from Cairo to the Temple of Taporisi Magna alive. Armed only with a couple of hijacked ashtrays and faced with a trek across the blazing Sahara desert can Wendy out-maneuver Russian oligarchs, a dozen Dark Force mercenaries, and Roger’s chubby ex-girlfriend in time to find the tomb and seal it before chaos erupts in Egypt?

A room filled with cat mummies caught my attention. Fiona marched ahead, but I was drawn inside. Cats were considered guardians of the underworld and protectors of those in the afterlife. The dried feline bodies caused a wave of sadness to wash over me. I moved to the middle of the room where the weight of a stare on my back caused me to spin around. I locked on to the dark eyeholes in the head of a long-necked cat mummy standing next to a wooden cat coffin. The plaque under the cat noted it had been entombed with its master, one of Cleopatra’s guards who had been slain protecting her in the early days of her reign. A tear ran down my cheek. I shook my head to break the strange connection I felt with the tiny figure. “Wendy!” Fiona’s shrill voice snapped me out of my mystic fog. She was standing cross-legged in the doorway, frantically beckoning to me. Before I could move, a cat brushed my ankle. I jumped and looked down. No cat there. As crazy as it seemed I swiveled my head toward the cat mummy. I could have sworn it winked. My imagination was working overtime. “Wendy, I really have to go.” I barreled through a door marked with a drawing of a woman in a long skirt with a scarf over her head. The lights were a notch down from the gloomy hallway. Fiona managed to squeeze by me and race into the nearest stall, I grabbed a potty two doors over. I locked the door then wrestled with my long skirt and the weight of two mummy-ashtrays in the pockets. I swathed it around my thighs and lifted it just as someone pushed on the stall door. A gravelly male voice, heavily accented in Arabic said, “Open the door!” I dropped my skirt, dragging the hem in the toilet. Ick. The curse of wearing a long skirt. “Wendy! Who is that?” Fiona called. “Is that a sex-maniac?” “Don’t sound so excited,” I said pressing against the door as it shuddered from a fist bashing on the other side. “Open up! I have something for you.” “Go away.” I fought to keep my voice from quavering. “Open up or I’ll… put it under the door.” “You do and I’ll step on it,” I yelled. He damn sure wasn’t delivering a pizza. Something let loose with a high-pitched howl. It sounded like a cat but meaner. I adjusted my skirt, bent down, and peeked under the stall door. Nothing. No male feet. No feet at all. Only the shadow of a cat. What happened to Gravel Voice? “Fiona, on the count of three hit your door and start running. I’ll be right beside you. One!” “I can’t get my Spanx up. I’m too sweaty!” Spanx, my foot. A girdle is a girdle, and a girdle in this heat is ridiculous. “Fiona, drop ‘em and start running!” “It’s the only pair I brought with me…” “Two. Three!” I kicked open the door. No one was there. I didn’t bother checking the shadows. “Run for it!” I imitated Fred Flintstone powering his stone-age car as I paddled my feet for all I was worth. Fiona galloped alongside me. “Was he good looking?” “Shut up and run!” We slip-skidded down the hall and onto the slick-as-glass stone staircase. We shot down the stairs like supercharged Slinkies.
About the Heroine: Wendy Darlin
Until last year Wendy Darlin was a full-time real estate agent for Miami Beach millionaires. Then she met Roger Jolley, world famous archaeologist, Johnny Depp look-alike, and at times the most irritating person on the planet. Her heart, snarky mouth, and comedic capers keep her in constant peril. She’s been told her life is like the movie Romancing the Stone, but at times she feels more like Indiana Jones with boobs.

The moonlight cast a shadow on him, making it hard to see his salt and pepper crew-cut. He walked up and stood next to her.
The urge to grab him hadn’t gone away. His stare made her nervous, but she didn’t turn away from him.
The night’s darkness blanketed them like her quilt. She could barely make out his eyes. The energy between them was like a magnet.
They stood in silence.
She could smell his sweet scent.
“We need to talk.” He broke the silence. His hands were plunged deep in his front jean pockets and he rocked back and forth on his heels. “Is Hayes sleeping?”
“Yes.” The word gently rolled off her lips. “What can I do for you?”
“That is a loaded question, Liz.” He turned around leaving her with a view to be desired, only to come back. Closer. “The way I see it, we have a problem.”
She enjoyed the way his eyes licked her up and down, taking in the curves of her neck and over her shoulders.
“What problem is that?” she asked, cold and calculated.
There was no way she was going to agree with such a statement. Even though she knew he was right. She wanted to hear it from him. She needed to hear that she made him as crazy as he made her.
“You’re sexy as hell. I want you. Jenna is a problem.” He walked to the gate.

Tonya Kappes' Cat Capers and Feline Flirts

Brenda Novak's annual online auction has raised over $2 million for Juvenile Diabetes research, and preparations are being made for the May 2014 auction. This is an opportunity to support this important cause while promoting one's books and website.

I'm hosting an auction category titled, "Tonya Kappes' Cat Capers & Feline Flirts." All of the prizes in my category will offer books (any genre) with cats in them. Authors who have books that include cats can donate a print or ebook to this category by emailing me at Tonya at tonyak11 @ yahoo.com (no spaces).

Marcia's category is "Canine Cupids and Crimefighters," and all of the prizes will offer books (any genre) with dogs in them, along with dog-themed prizes. Authors who have books that include dogs can donate a print or ebook to this category by emailing Marcia at ACMarcia @ aol.com (no spaces).

Here's what we'll need from you:

Title of donated book
Genre of donated book
Sensuality level of donated book
Author pen name
Author website URL

At the end of the May 2014 auction, I will be given the winners' names, along with their snail-mail and email addresses. Then we'll contact the participating authors, so they can send their print books or ebooks directly to the winners.

The 2014 auction prizes will be listed on the auction website starting in January, since many of the thousands of auction visitors enjoy checking out the prizes before the auction begins. So, we'll need to hear from donating authors by December 15th.

Young Adult? I HAVE THREE TEENAGE BOYS!

I did it. I FINALLY did it.

It's no secret that I have three teenage boys that live at home plus a twenty year old that's out of the house, but nonetheless, they have or are going through the growing pains of being a teenager.
I deal with teenage girls on a daily basis because when you  have that many boys in the house, you have to multiply that by 4 because that is how many more teenage boys are in my house THEN you have to multiply that by 7 because that is how many girls will be here at a given time.
When I say I'm around teenagers all the time. . .I meant that I'm literally around teenagers ALL. THE. TIME!
I don't mind. My hubby and I would much rather them be under our roof than somewhere else not knowing where they are. Plus the girls are fun. They like me and give me the girly time I need to thank God that he didn't give me girls *grin*. And my boys think it's cool that the girls at school really like their mom and the teens think it's cool I'm a writer.
Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, always asks me why I don't write Young Adult. My standard response, "ARE YOU KIDDING? I live with it 24/7. Why would I want to write about it?"
Five years later. . .I did it.
I wrote and finished a Young Adult novel.
My niece, for those of you who don't know me~I LOVE LOVE LOVE my niece and nephew like my own and they are 14 and 16 so the same ages as my guys~anyways (see my mind works like a teen), my niece and her high school friends have been my peer audience. Final verdict~THEY LOVED IT!
One of the girls said that she was completely in love with the hot hunky hero! Shh....secretly I am too!
Still...it's a novel that has all the teen angst, sex, social issues that include drugs, drinking and being bullied. BUT it's a Tonya Kappes novel. You know what that means! There is totally a fun loving, eccentric character along with some paranormal.
I have to say that I learned a lot about the teens of today and surprised how truly there isn't a whole lot of difference from when I was a teen (which was well over twenty years ago) in the way they think, social settings, and sex.

Pretty In Pink, which happens to be one mine and my guys fav movies, is truly NOT that far off from today's teens. The boys are still goofy, the girls are still too mature for their age, the partying is still going on with the drinking and sex but the clothes have changed.
I guess you can say that I have pretty good research material when it came to writing the Young Adult. Surprisingly I found that I have a true writer's voice for the genre and really enjoyed writing it.
Do you read Young Adult? What do you like about it?
Leave a comment and I will send the winner an ARC copy of A GHOSTLY UNDERTAKING and some swag!

Happy FRIDAY!!

Okay....so who is addicted to Pinterest? ME!!!!!
The winner of my USA Today Bestseller STRUNG OUT TO DIE is Mary Edwards!! Congrats!!!
Congrats to Hilleary for winning an ebook copy of GROOMING MR RIGHT!!!
You have one week to contact me for your prize. Congrats!!

Grooming Mr. Right . . .Grooming This Author!

It's here! My latest contemporary, sweet romance is here!
And I still can't help but smile when I see the USA Today Bestselling Author underneath my name. Not in my wildest dreams did I ever think I would make one of the two big girl's lists when I left my publisher three years ago. I couldn't have done it without my readers! My amazing, wonderful, fabtabulous READERS! Thank you so much for making Grooming Mr. Right a bestseller right out of the gate!

As an author I have made my niche in the cozy mystery genre. I love writing mystery, I really do. But I started out writing romance. After all, I am a romantic at heart. All things flowers. All things chocolate. And all things sweet.

There isn't anything better than sitting down and crafting a feel good story.

When I set out to write another romance between my mystery releases, I did it for me. For my soul. Killing people is great! Killing people take a toll on my belief in people, so I have to do a little restart. That is where GROOMING MR RIGHT came in.

It was a good way to change my thoughts and restore the good in people. I love going through the journey of my heroine having to rediscover her hometown and family. I love how she has to come to a realization that the items she prayed so hard for truly wasn't what she thought she wanted.

If you are looking for a sweet romance with a dash of laughter and a wee-bit of tears, GROOMING MR RIGHT is for you!

Do you read sweet romance? What do you love most about it?

I will give away an ecopy format of choice to one lucky comment!

#selfpublished #author Defies All Odds With TWO #USAToday #Bestsellers in ONE WEEK!

When I left my publisher and decided to self publish, it was when self publishing had (and I mean HAD) a stigma to it.
I did my research! I knew some of my colleagues would turn up their noses or snicker under their breath, but writers weren't who I wanted to buy my self published novels! It's YOU, my readers!!
I did the unthinkable! I STARTED TO DO THINGS TO REACH YOU! MY READERS!

Eventually the publishing tide started to turn and the self publishing stigma began to go away making the line between traditional publishing and self publishing becoming blurred. . .very blurred. My colleagues began to call me, they wanted to know how I did it. How did I make all of the bestseller lists?

My heart was over joyed! With authors like me, the self publishing ceiling was being blown up into little pieces. I was paving the way for others to start their publishing journey on a successful road with all of the trial and error I had been doing along the way. Of course I picked up tips, as well as other picking up tips from me, on creative ways to continue on a successful self publishing journey. BUT the reader was and always will be the number one goal in my writing career.

As the years have ticked by, with 15 novels under my publishing belt, I'm sooooo excited to FINALLY announce:
I MADE THE USA TODAY BESTSELLER LIST WITH TWO NOVELS THIS WEEK!!!

STRUNG OUT TO DIE debut is at #129 and THE PERFECT TEN box set (A CHARMING CRIME) is #118 on the list.

It's such an honor! I'm so grateful to each and every single one of you for supporting me along this amazing and fun journey!

Holly Harper's life is finally getting back on the right track after her divorce from "what's his name." She and a group of divorcees have formed a strong bond plotting creative ways to get back at their exes and created a self-help group known as The Divorced Divas where their meetings are held in Holly's bead store, The Beaded Dragonfly.

It’s no secret that Holly’s ex husband, Sean Harper, and the wealthiest bachelor in Swanee, Doug Sloan, don’t get along because Sean is constantly fixing all of Doug’s shoddy handy man work. Plus all the Divas would love to get their claws in some of Doug’s money.

When Doug ends up dead on the floor of The Beaded Dragonfly with a string of cat eye beads around his neck, it’s up to Holly to figure out whose framing her.

#Fantasy #book Winner in the eFestival of Words

I'm so excited to announce A CHARMING CRIME has won the eFestival of Words in the Fantasy and Urban category.

This is such an honor because it is reader nominated. I have no idea who nominated me, but I'm so honored and thrilled to have won. I love writing The Magical Cures Mystery Series. There is so much fun in the magical town and June Heal is a pleasure to write!

Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart!

A CHARMING CRIME:
***2013 eFestival of Words Fantasy Novel Winner***

Bubble... Bubble...

June Heal has nothing to lose when she relocates her homeopathic cure shop, A Dose of Darla, from the flea market booth in her home town, to a quaint shop in the cozy but unusual little town of Whispering Falls, Kentucky. Or so it seems.

Cures and trouble...

Whispering Falls has a lot of secrets. From talking snow globes to whispering animals not to mention a few sprinkles of fairy dust, June realizes Whispering Falls is more magical than she thought. . .literally.

Magic stirs...

June discovers she was born into a family of psychics, and her homeopathic cures truly are magical. Unfortunately, they are not magical enough to save her from being the number one murder suspect when a member of the community that she had just had a disagreement with shows up face down in the lake with June’s lucky charm in the victim’s grasp.

And troubles double...

Add to that an attraction to her high school best friend, Sheriff Oscar Park and Mr. Prince Charming, her cat, is stealing charms from Belle’s Baubles, June is forced to clear her name in more ways than murder. After all, they don’t have cauldrons in jail.

A Charming Crime is book one of the bestselling Magical Cures Mystery series. Come walk around Whispering Falls for a fun, fantasy mystery with magic and romance. You won't want to leave.
