Camp Wildcat Reenactment and Giveaway!

***GIVEAWAY OVER***
CONGRATULATIONS TO Gina Johnson!!

Hi there! I'm so glad you're visiting our little town of Normal. Right over there is where the Camp Wildcat happened between the north and the south on the morning of October 21, 1861.
I'm Queenie French the Foundation of Camp Wildcat president. We've been doing the reenactment for years and this year is going to be the best yet.

If you take a gander at the map, you'll see you're standing where the red star is located.
I know the battle was in the fall, but Colonel Theophilous Garrard had started to form his unit in the spring of 1861.

Besides, the weather in Kentucky in the fall is so wonky and unpredictable, I asked the committee to change the reenactment to the spring. Plus, look at this weather. Gorgeous!

Granted, the outcome of the reenactment is the same year after year, but I have to say that the actors I've picked this year will be fantastic and on their mark. It takes a lot of skill to drop dead and lay there for an hour or two until the reenactment is over.

I know of few of my actors are a little. . .um . . .nervous since Greaser Gadie has escaped prison and they were on the jury. I'd be nervous too if I was a juror and he turned to me and say, "I'm taking a minute to remember your face so when I get out of here I'm going to find you and kill you."
But I'm sure he's long gone by now.

Right? I mean, if I escaped from prison, I wouldn't hang around to make good on a silly promise. . .would you???

  22. Yes, I have gone to a reenactment. When we lived in the southern part of the state, we were within 10 miles of Washington, AR. There is a state park there. It was the Confederate capital of Arkansas for a time. Every year they have a couple different reenactments with little festivals. One includes full attire for the civil war with a battle reenactment. The other is more of a cooking even with everything cooked over open fires as done in the civil war era but everyone that participates is dressed for that time period and the spectators get to enjoy the bounty of the cooking pots. Both were lots of fun to attend.

Thank you for the opportunity to win an awesome prize pack - especially the ARC copy of DESERTS, DRIVING, & DERELICTS!

  30. A long time ago, before children, we visited one of my husband's college grad school friends in Tucson, AZ. We went to visit Old Tucson a short distance away where they reenacted a gunfight. It was fun to walk around the town and see the staged fight. This is also an old movie set. How the West Was Won was filmed there and I think some old TV shows, ? Dr Quinn?.

  71. I live in Vicksburg, MS and have been to a Civil War re-enactment in the Vicksburg National Military Park. Even if you don’t go, you can hear the cannons blast. I really didn’t enjoy the experience, but there are people here who absolutely love participating.

A re-enactment I did enjoy as a kid was held at Mt. Locust, a house on the Natchez Trace Parkway. They had spinners, weavers, a blacksmith, people building a split rail fence, and more. It gave a glimpse of life in the 1700’s as the area was settled.
