Road Trippin'

Today I was taking my momma on an adventure! She's going to be traveling around with me a few times a year to different authorly things.

We were heading to Charlotte, North Carolina. I've never been to Charlotte and I was looking forward to attending Authors After Dark for the first time.

There will be a fun Reader's Mad Tea Party I hope a bunch of readers attend on Saturday night!

My car was packed and I was ready to roll....when my sweet Charlie developed Congestive Heart Failure. We woke up and he was coughing. Three weeks ago I had gotten the news he would be developing the disease within three months....not three weeks.
This picture was taken two days ago. Charlie is on the left. He is a sweet soul and I knew we had to get to the doctor. Through a slew of wonderful happenings, yesterday Charlie was put into a CHF study with a renowned Cardiologist. The study is very involved on my end and the clinics. The first seven days are critical to the study.  I have to keep his breathing stats, give him ten pills a day where I have to track those, take phone calls from the clinic, and take Charlie every few days so they can check his blood pressures, EKG, X-rays and more. You should see the big ole school binder they gave me with at least one hundred pages!

I'm so thrilled he is able to get in with this group of amazing doctors. They did ask me to change my plans to go out of town. . .So I guess Charlotte wasn't meant to be for me and momma.

For now, I will rest with Charlie and get words on a page while he recovers from our first hurdle of his disease.

Have you ever had to cancel a trip for a pet????

I'm giving away a print copy of CHECKERED CRIME to one lucky comment!!! I will pick a winner next Thursday!

  2. I never cancelled but before I moved down to the Gulf Coast I was the kid that flew down here to help the Folks. I lived right outside of Charlotte! So a little over 3 years ago my Dad called said he had to have 2 surgeries, I kbnew this was no 2 week trip and my neighbor taking care of Maggie who is now 10 years old. I was here 4 months flew down with Maggie in her carrier. Two months later I made the decision to move here, I lived with my folks for 9 months until I found my place. It was like OMG I'm moving back home LOL But if it meant I had to cancel a trip for my Maggie girl I would!

  3. I haven't ever actually canceled a trip for a pet but but I will not go out of town or overnight anywhere because of mine. A few years ago we found out that our kitty Jasper is diabetic. He is getting old and I don't think he would travel well anymore. I don't have the heart to go anywhere and leave him with a sitter so at home we stay! I just wouldn't be able to enjoy myself. Anyway, I hope that Charlie does well with the tests. Praying for you and him! He is lucky to have a sweet and caring Momma like you.

  4. Well we never had to cancel a trip but when we rescued our Blitzy from the shelter I could never kennel him. His life consisted of being in a shelter most of his life. We got him at 4 and had him for 8 wonderful years after that he was the best dog ever... Mom and dad begged us to come and visit but they sort of understood. It was just to hard to leave him, none of my family would watch him while we left. So we didn't vacation.

  8. Never had to cancel one, but nearly had to cut on short when our little beagle boy, Atom, was attacked by a couple of dogs and had to have surgery. Thankfully my sister handled it very well and I didn't have to hop that plane back home, but I was ready to if need be! Praying for you and Charlie! <3

  9. I not only cancelled a trip for my animals - we sold our home and moved for our animals. We needed a safe place for our dogs/cats and horses.

  10. Thank you so much for this message. Max coughs painfully every day and I rub his neck until he calms down. It's not kennel cough, and last year his heart had a murmur but this year it sounded okay. I am wondering how they found Congestive Heart Failure. Even if that is not it for Max, I am thinking we need to call back. I am sure that being near you, so he can see you, is calming to Charlie. I slept on the floor beside our pug, the night she passed away. I know this is hard, but how wonderful to know you've done everything you could to make him happy and well. God bless you, Tonya. Love, Teri

    1. Oh! I did not cancel a trip, but our dog (shepard)died unexpectedly when we were away and a neighbor buried him for us. We felt so bad for the girl who was watching him...

  11. I never had to cancel trip plans for my animal companions, I DID buy a house though. My job (Res. Ser. Aide at MR facility) transferred me to Hamburg, PA after the facility I worked at, Embreeville, was ordered shut down. I started looking at apartments in Hamburg, but none of them were "pet friendly". I decided to suck it in and get a HOUSE for BossCat Roadie (RIP sweets) & I. I hope the med trial works for Sweet Charlie, Tonya.

  12. I've never had to cancel a trip for my pet, but my husband had to be amazing and do some heroic things for our dog while I was in the hospital having a major surgery. He didn't want me to worry about our furbaby Mickey while I was in for a hysterectomy. My hubster had to take Mickey in for emergency surgery due to bladder stones. He had five minutes to decide whether to approve the surgery or have Mickey put to sleep. He chose the surgery and we were gifted with another 14 months with our furbaby. Best money and decision my husband ever spent/made. Loads of hugs to you, Charlie, all of your boys and furbabies! Love you, Tonya!

  13. I haven't cancelled a trip , I I did have to cancel a birthday party the day we lost our special boy (Smokey) I still miss him so much. Pets truly are part if a Family,. I would cancel a trip in a heartbeat if one of my pets needed me, we have five cats, and they rule our home!

  14. I've never had to cancel for a pet, but I would!! When I had multiple cats, I said no to a weekend trip to care for them.

  15. I almost canceled once, but everyone told me to go. I had my wonderful family taking care of my dog for the few days. She had been sick for like a month. I went on the trip, but worried about her the whole time. She did okay while I was gone. It was about three weeks after that when she took a turn for the worst.

Pets are one of the most wonderful parts of life! That's great that Charlie made it into the study. Sounds like a lot of work, but we'll do anything for our lovable fur babies! Good luck! Lots of hugs and good thoughts coming your way!

  18. You and Charlie are in my prayers. My cat General had diabetes and I had to give him insulin shots twice a day. He was the BEST cat I ever had and I wouldn't trade the time I had with him for anything in the world <3

  19. You are a wonderful mommy to your pets. They are so lucky to have you in their lives. Hope Charlie starts feeling better and can continue to have a happy life. I've never gone thru anything like this.

  21. Best of luck with the study I hope it really helps Charlie. I actually did have to cut short a vacation due to my beagle "Benneton" breaking her leg while we were camping. We had gone camping by Cave Lake and she was chasing after some kind of small animal when she caught her right foreleg in a hole and broke her leg. All our stuff was left with the friends we were camping with and we drove almost 80 miles to the nearest emergency vet. She wound up with a cast on her leg for almost 9 weeks and walked with a limp until the day she passed away.
