World's Best Story Interview

I'm so happy to be a part of the WORLD'S BEST STORY. Here is a fun interview they posted :)

Thrilled to share my interview with USA TODAY bestselling author and judge for World's Best Story Tonya Kappes.
1- What are the ingredients for a blockbuster story to you?
Great question! Amazing cover because it's the first thing the reader sees and gets their attention. A great storyline with characters readers can relate to is the key!
2- What story has influenced your life?
My own ;)
3- What writer would you consider a mentor?
Hmm...I really don't have one. I took the bull by the horns and held on!
4- What story do you enjoy reading over and over again?
Anything by Agatha Christie!
5- Do you have any advice to aspiring writers?
Write, write, write. There is nothing they can do with a blank page. Writers write, not dream of it.
6- Do you recall how your interest in writing originated?
I'm a reader and I would make up my own endings to the novels I as reading.
7- When you got the four book deal from NY Publishing house HarperCollins, how did it feel?
It's interesting really. I thought I was going to go nuts and really get validation for my work, but that didn't happen. I'm so grateful and excited for the deal. And they have been amazing to work with. Perfect in fact. When I look back, I get validation for my work when I get emails from readers telling me how my books got them through deaths, divorces, hard times, or even when they had a great day and reading one of my books gave them a perfect ending to their day. That is validation!
7- How would you increase literacy?
There is nothing more powerful than meeting an author who really love reaching readers! I have been in many different situations that weren't book related and converted NON-readers (gasp...the thought!) to readers! They connected with me as a person and decided to pick up a Tonya Kappes mystery. I LOVE those emails that tell me I inspired them to start reading and escape into a world of fiction. LOVE THAT!
8- If you were given the power to become invisible for one day, what would you do?
I CAN'T TELL YOU THAT...just in case it does come true and you see the act on the National News...it would be amazing and AWESOME though ;)
9- If heaven exists, what is the first thing you would like to hear from God when you arrive at the Pearly Gates?
Seriously...you had to pick killing people as your life's passion?
10- If you could grant someone one wish, who would it be? Why?
I would give HAPPINESS to anyone! Happiness is the key to a full life. With happiness the Universe is aligned and you get whatever your heart desires. sigh....
11- If you were given 5000$ and told you have one day to spend it, what would you buy?
I would have to invest it in one of my guys college tuition...I have three that will be in college at the same time....I HAVE TO SELL MORE BOOKS!!

Easter and the Derby?

Okay..
Easter is in April and the Derby is in May! But here in Kentucky and the south, we don't have Easter without the Derby pie!

Kentucky Derby Pie
(from my mama~Linda Lowry)
My mama’s Derby Pie is smack your mama good! It’s a southern pie with walnuts and chocolate chips. You can use pecans in substitute for the walnuts, but I really like my walnuts!

Ingredients: ½ cup melted butter
1 cup sugar ½ cup flour 2 beaten eggs 1 tsp. vanilla extract ¾ cup Walnuts or pecans (your choice not both!) ¾ cup chocolate chips (or more if you really want it gooey!)
Directions Mix in the order that’s written under the ingredients. This is very important. Pour the mixture into an unbaked 9 inch pie shell. Bake at 350° for 30 minutes.

Enjoy this amazing video of an artist decorating eggs.

Happy happy Easter!!

And they're off....

WOW! I had a super busy weekend. It was filled with fun and fear!  On Saturday our son Austin was in charge of his fraternity alumni/parent weekend at Keeneland Racetrack.

Now...y'all know I love horse racing and Keeneland. I grew up going to the races and Keeneland is literally fifteen minutes from my childhood home. Friends of my family started Keeneland and still own it today. So...I'm pretty at home there.
It was opening weekend, which meant there were probably around 40k people there. 40,000 PEOPLE!!!

(These little jockeys are so cute. They have the names of winners on their little boards.)
The food line is 1 1/2 hours long to stand in...not to mention the bathroom. You don't think that sounds like fun?? It is! We get there and tailgate on "The Hill." It's the cute name for the grassy area on Keeneland where you can tailgate all day long and never see a horse. But it's the thrill and inside that I love.
There are two races an hour so there's …

How To Get Reviews For Your Novel

I don't care what anyone says....reviews are important.

I hear a lot of authors that say they don't rely on reviews to read their books and they are full of it. That is why we have reviews and review sites like Goodreads, right?

I'm not saying that you have to read the reviews your novel gets, but reviews are important. They will help you market your novel, especially if you are self published.

Nowadays, more and more review sites are accepting self published authors to review. So you better be sure that your book is the best it can possibly be or you won't get the reviews you want.

Regardless, you need reviews.

Here are a few ways I get reviews for my novels:

1) Goodreads giveaways.

Taking advantage of the giveaway on Goodreads is a great way to get reviews. I offer three copies of my book when it's released using this Goodreads feature. I hold the giveaway for a month and get thousands of requests.

Once Goodreads announces the three winners, I send them a book co…
